LIVE from Denver: Congressman McDermott in the Big Tent

It was really nice to have Congressman Jim McDermott come by and chat with local bloggers and he was his usual jovial self. I also saw Deborah Senn. It's nice to see people like this visit with bloggers from their home states. It's been happening all day, as long as they are able to go through the right channels to be able to get in. Several times today I have been asked to show my blogger credential. This is short, but I'll add more if any other "locals" are spotted. It's time to get out into the sunlight.

LIVE from Denver: The Media Circus

I was just interviewed by a woman from the New York Times and earlier Katie Couric was running around here with an entourage. Dan Rather spoke upstairs (see story below) but I did not leave this prime couch location, for it's great people watching and eavesdropping, as well as a place to plug in the laptop, drink Blind Roast Coffee (actually roasted by a blind man) and watch representatives of corporate media try to find out what goes on in the Big Tent.

It was enjoyable to tell the reporter why I don't watch television, even to see what others are watching. I don't necessarily eat fast food every day to see what that's like either. I told her that my primary news sources are NPR and the internet and have been ever since the 1991 Gulf War, which the media seemed to treat as a video game. It was amusing when she asked me my cell phone number and I would have had to look it up (since I use it as little as possible) so gave her my email instead. She also found out that I had attended both YearlyKos conventions, NetRoots Nation and the 2004 convention in Boston as well as this one.

Like Rick Steves the travel guru, I believe strongly that it is better to travel "close to the ground." It is pleasant to sit here on my couch and watch an interview going on not ten feet away from me, but I'll soon venture upstairs for the talks or out on the street. Andrew has been able to head over to the Pepsi Center, so will be close to the action. One thing I know - the food will be better here - and cheaper.

Jennifer Not Upset by Text Message Dump From John Mayer

Jennifer Aniston's friends say the actress is not upset by John Mayer dumping her via text message. The two celebrities, Mayer and Aniston, began dating in April. They broke up earlier this month.

Sources have claimed that the split has hit Aniston, 39, hard but her friends now insist that she didn’t see a future with the 30-year-old singer.

“Jen didn’t see herself and John having much in common or having a future together,” a friend said. “She wasn’t fazed by the ending of it. She wasn’t hurt at all. She feels fine.”

Meanwhile, insiders have said that Aniston turned to her ex-husband Brad Pitt after the split. A source claims the "Friends" actress talked with Pitt over the phone after trying to get in touch with his mother Jane.

Shaquille O'Neal Stalking Alexis Miller | Atlanta

Alexis Miller, aka Maryjane, alleges that NBA star Shaquille O-Neal is stalking her. Miller is a 23-year-old hip-hop artist. Her stage name is Maryjane. She claimed she ended an intimate relationship with O'Neal last month. And, after her termination of their "union" Shaq then threatened to pay performers $50,000 each not to work with her, according to Miller.

Fulton County, in Atlanta, GA, Superior Court Judge Richard Hicks granted Alexis Miller's request. The judge reviewed her allegations that the basketball player stalked her, threatened her with bodily harm, and made harassing phone calls in which he breathed heavily into the phone before hanging up. As a result, Shaquille O'Neal has been ordered to steer clear of Alexis Miller, after the Atlanta-area woman took out a restraining order Thursday.

Both parties are ordered to appear in an Atlanta court in the first week of September.

Wow... what a way to go out, adding "stalker" to your legacy. Best to leave those "PYTs" (pretty young thing) alone when they say "go away."

Michael Phelps Wins 8 Gold Medals | 2008 Summer Olympic Games

It's Phelps Fever! Michael Phelps is a bonafide celebrity! Phelps has been called a "Billion Dollar Man" for possible earnings ahead after winning 8 Gold Meals at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games. But, the modest swimmer says it's not about the money.

The marketing industry believes the 23-year-old American phenom will easily become the richest swimmer ever, far surpassing the former most decorated US swimmer, Mark Spitz. It sounds great but after speaking with Reuters on Monday when he finished his record eighth gold medal win, Phelps shrugged off the monetary impact of his success.

Michael Phelps became the first competitor in the history of the Olympics to win eight gold medals at a single Games as the United States won the men's 4x100m medley relay on Sunday.

Also, Phelps' 14 career Gold medals are the most of any Olympian.

And, at the age of 23, Phelps has set a record for the total number of medals won by a male Olympian, at 16. Only Ukrainian gymnast Larysa Latynina 18 career medals exceed Phelps' total. Latynina won 9 gold medals out of the 18.

RIP Bernie Mac | Funeral Service | Memorial

Approximately 6,000 friends, fans, and celebrities attend the funeral service for Bernie Mac held at Chicago's House of Hope church on Saturday.

Mac, born Bernard Jeffrey McCullough, died the previous Saturday at the age of 50 from complications of pneumonia. He had been at Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital since the middle of July.

Traffic was tied up for blocks outside the church and vendors took advantage of the occasion by selling T-shirts for $10 each.

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley said at the memorial service that Mac had visited his office recently. He wanted to know how he could help fight violent crime in the city. Mayor Daly said,
He wanted to help get children away from a life of crime and violence.

A number of celebrities spoke at the service. Steve Harvey, DL Hughley, and Cedric the Entertainer, Mac's co-stars in the documentary The Original Kings of Comedy, also took the stage at the service. After looking over the crowd at the megachurch, Cedric the Entertainer cracked that the comedy king was
still the hottest ticket in town.

Bernie starred in the critically acclaimed TV series The Bernie Mac Show from 2001 to 2006. He appeared in several movies, namely Guess Who? Transformers, and The Ocean's Trilogy.

LisaRaye And Misick Treated For Bite Wounds | Domestic Dispute?

LisaRaye and husband, the prime minister of Turks and Caicos Islands, Michael Misick, were treated for bite wounds at hospital Wednesday night.

The couple still live together in the premier's mansion despite the marriage being over, but she was prevented from entering the home by some "palace" guards.

Misick's spokesman said, "LisaRaye, her cousin Phillip Travis, and her publicist, Lynn Jetter, assaulted the guard at the premier's home, proceeded to ransack the house, and then assaulted the premier and his sister. The premier at no time had any physical contact with LisaRaye."

LisaRaye countered, "An attempt was made by and on behalf of my husband to first prevent my entry into our home and then, later, to make me leave our home by force. I shall continue to assist the police force with its inquiries."~source

Check out this YouTube, uploaded on August 13, of LisaRaye speaking out:

It has been reported that LisaRaye and her husband knew each other for only 3 months before their lavish nuptials. That could be contributing to these problems. They didn't know each other well enough. No doubt, hubby is a major player-player. And he is mean, too.
